48 - THE 3INGHEXAGRAM.

(Looking at) 3ing, (we think of) how (the site of) a town may be changed, while (the fashion of) its wells undergoes no change. (The water of a well) never disappears and never receives (any great) increase, and those who come and those who go can draw and enjoy the benefit. If (the drawing) have nearly been accomplished, but, before the rope has quite reached the water, the bucket is broken, this is evil.

Tsing « puits ». On peut changer de place une ville, mais pas un puits. On ne l’acquiert pas, on ne le perd pas (il est ou il n’est pas). On y va, on en vient. S’il se dessèche, si sa corde vient à manquer, si le seau tombe au fond, ce sont autant d’accidents fâcheux. L’eau montant, le puits plein d’eau, c’est le sage qui exhorte et aide le peuple travailleur et besogneux

Eau par-dessus des arbres figure le puits.
Ainsi le sage anime le peuple et l’excite à l’affection mutuelle.

Commentaire
Le bois dans l’eau et au-dessus de l’eau figure le puits. Un puits bien ménagé ne s’épuise pas. Quand un de ces accidents arrive, c’est qu’on n’a pas fait ce qu’il fallait.

Hăng indicates successful progress and no error (in what it denotes). But the advantage will come from being firm and correct ; and movement in any direction whatever will be advantageous.

One must be careful before committing oneself, after one must continue.

Hāng : 1. Constance, permanence, stabilité ; 2. Partout, complètement ; 3. Lune presque pleine.

La vertu ferme, se développant sans défaillance, arrive à sa perfection et procure de l’avantage en tout et partout.

Symbolisme

Tonnerre et vent forment le Koua. Le sage reste ferme et ne change pas de conduite.

Commentaire

Hāng indique constance, permanence. C’est le fort en haut, le faible en bas (voir le Koua), le tonnerre et le vent en communication et concorde. C’est le moteur et le mû docile, la constance heureuse et la stabilité dans sa voie. La voie, les procédés du ciel et de la terre se perpétuent et ne cessent jamais. Le succès gît dans la persévérance en ce qu’on a commencé.
Le soleil et la lune, participant au ciel, perpétuent leur éclat. Les quatre saisons changeant et se succédant peuvent se perpétuer parfaitement. Le saint persévérant en sa voie, le monde se transforme et se perfectionne. En cette perpétuité, on peut voir les sentiments, les tendances du ciel et de la terre et de toutes choses

• 3. In the third line, divided, we see one whose carriage is dragged back, while the oxen in it are pushed back, and he is himself subjected to the shaving of his head and the cutting dff of his nose. There is no good beginning, but there will be a good end.
• 5. The fifth line, divided, shows that (to its subject) occasion for repentance will disappear. With his relative (and minister he unites closely and readily) as if he were biting through a piece of skin. When he goes forward (with this help), what error can there be ?
• 6. The topmost line, undivided, shows its subject solitary amidst the (prevailing) disunion. (In the subject of the third line, he seems to) see a pig bearing on its back a load of mud, (or fancies) there is a carriage full of ghosts. He first bends his bow against him, and afterwards unbends it, (for he discovers) that he is not an assailant to injure, but a near relative. Going forward, he shall meet with (genial) rain, and there will be good fortune.

• 3. (Effets de la discorde, des luttes.) On voit un char entraîné par la force, son boeuf saisi et arraché, son conducteur maltraité et le nez coupé. Mais un commencement fâcheux peut avoir une bonne fin, si l’union se rétablit.
• 5. Par l’union toute cause de souci disparaît, les parents sont unis.
  
  Litt. : se mordent la peau. Ce qui indique pénétration, union de sentiments.
  
  Où qu’on aille, plus de cause de regret.
  
  On est approuvé de tous.
  
  Le grand est sincère envers le petit. Tchéou-Yih, etc. Sens : Quand la désunion a disparu, les familles sont dans la joie, mangent abondamment.
• 6. Seul dans la désunion, le banni est comme quelqu’un qui voit un porc immonde ou un char plein de mauvais esprits. Il tend d’abord son arc pour tirer, puis le lâche. Si ce n’est point un méchant, un brigand ravisseur et que le sort lui soit favorable, le bonheur reviendra.
