24 - THE FÛ HEXAGRAM.

Fû indicates that there will be free course and progress (in what it denotes). (The subject of it) finds no one to distress him in his exits and entrances; friends come to him, and no error is committed. He will return and repeat his (proper) course. In seven days comes his return. There will be advantage in whatever direction movement is made.

Si dans ses rapports, ses actes, on n’offense pas, les amis viendront et l’on ne faiblira pas. Si l’on corrige sa conduite dans ses actes journaliers, pendant sept jours, on réussira dans tout ce qu’on entreprendra.

Symbolisme

La terre au-dessus du tonnerre. Les anciens rois, au jour du solstice (ou, au septième jour) fermaient les frontières. Les marchands et les voyageurs ne pouvaient plus passer ; les princes ne pouvaient inspecter les régions. C’était une sorte de repos, d’inaction forcée, comme celle du tonnerre enfermé, tenu sous terre dans l’hexagramme. De là cette citation.

Commentaire

Se corriger est chose heureuse quand on s’amende fermement. Il en arrivera comme il est dit au texte, si l’on agit avec condescendance et soumission aux règles. Se corriger, comme il est dit, est la manière d’agir du ciel. On réussira ; la force, la fermeté grandira. En cela ne voyons-nous pas le coeur du ciel et de la terre ?

• 1. The first line, undivided, shows its subject in (the pride of) strength advancing with his toes. He goes forward, but will not succeed. There will be ground for blame.
• 2. The second line, undivided, shows its subject full of apprehension and appealing (for sympathy and help). Late at night hostile measures may be (taken against him), but he need not be anxious about them.
• 3. The third line, undivided, shows its subject (about to advance) with strong (and determined) looks. There will be evil. (But) the superior man, bent on cutting off (the criminal), will walk alone and encounter the rain, (till he be hated by his proper associates) as if he were contaminated (by the others). (In the end) there will be no blame against him.
• 4. The fourth line, undivided, shows one from whose buttocks the skin has been stripped, and who walks slowly and with difficulty. (If he could act) like a sheep led (after its companions), occasion for repentance would disappear. But though he hear these words, he will not believe them.
• 5. The fifth line, undivided, shows (the small men like) a bed of purslain, which ought to be uprooted with the utmost determination. (The subject of the line having such determination), his action, in harmony with his central position, will lead to no error or blame.

  Vaincu, il s’en ira plein de regret.

• 4. Si l’on va comme manquant d’appui*, avançant pas à pas et comme conduisant un troupeau de moutons, par le fait même de cette lenteur prudente on n’aura point de cause de regret. On ne se fiera pas à tout ce qu’on entend dire.
