Commentaire

La vraie grandeur, c’est la bonté possédant les honneurs ; le grand gardant le milieu, et petits et grands restant en harmonie. Force et fermeté avec habileté et intelligence forment sa vertu. Il est d’accord avec le ciel, agit à son temps et prospère grandement.

2 - THE KHWĂN HEXAGRAM

Khwăn (represents) what is great and originating, penetrating, advantageous, correct and having the firmness of a mare. When the superior man (here intended) has to make any movement, if he take the initiative, he will go astray ; if he follow, he will find his (proper) lord. The advantageousness will be seen in his getting friends in the south-west, and losing friends in the north-east. If he rest in correctness and firmness, there will be good fortune.

2 - Obedience

Being able to help, without making decisions.

Kwūn : a) Principe passif, réceptif. 1. Terre étendue et portant ; 2. Femme, femelle ; 3. Soumission, complaisance ; 4. Support, appui. — b) Kwun, fermer, lier. c) Kwun : vêtement impérial.

Texte

Kwùn : Terre recevant l’action du principe actif et portant, produisant ; femelle portant et produisant, concourant à la série des quatre actes de la vie des êtres. Le grand, en ce qu’il fait, ne doit point prévenir l’action des forces naturelles ; s’il le fait, il échouera ; s’il agit après et la suit, il réussira. S’il met son propre avantage au-dessus de tout, il pourra acquérir des amis d’un côté, mais il les perdra de l’autre. S’il cherche la paix, la concorde de toutes les puissances, il réussira et sera heureux.


Symbolisme

Le double trigramme de la terre, la terre partout, indique la vertu caractéristique de celle-ci : supporter, entretenir tout. Le sage s’y conformant, entretient et contient tous les êtres par sa vaste vertu.

Commentaire

Suprême est le principe passif de la terre, tous les êtres en reçoivent leur naissance, mais il est complètement soumis au principe actif du ciel. La terre en son amplitude porte toutes choses ; sa vertu est sans limite comme (celle du ciel). Contenant immense, son éclat est grand. Tous les êtres s’y développent ensemble. L’animal femelle (la jument) a la nature de la terre ; elle la parcourt sans terme ni fin. Douceur et soumission (qui sont ses qualités) prouvent le bonheur ; le sage doit les pratiquer. Le bien résultant de la fermeté paisible et durable correspond à l’immense vertu de la terre. (La jument est passive et active comme la terre qui reçoit et produit.)

• 1. The first line, undivided, shows its subject in (the pride of) strength advancing with his toes. He goes forward, but will not succeed. There will be ground for blame.
• 2. The second line, undivided, shows its subject full of apprehension and appealing (for sympathy and help). Late at night hostile measures may be (taken against him), but he need not be anxious about them.
• 3. The third line, undivided, shows its subject (about to advance) with strong (and determined) looks. There will be evil. (But) the superior man, bent on cutting off (the criminal), will walk alone and encounter the rain, (till he be hated by his proper associates) as if he were contaminated (by the others). (In the end) there will be no blame against him.
• 4. The fourth line, undivided, shows one from whose buttocks the skin has been stripped, and who walks slowly and with difficulty. (If he could act) like a sheep led (after its companions), occasion for repentance would disappear. But though he hear these words, he will not believe them.
• 5. The fifth line, undivided, shows (the small men like) a bed of purslain, which ought to be uprooted with the utmost determination. (The subject of the line having such determination), his action, in harmony with his central position, will lead to no error or blame.

Kwāi : 1. Rivière divisée en branches ; diviser, couper, disperser ; 2. Décider, régler définitivement, résolu, tranchant ; 3. Habileté, art, prudence.

• 1. Celui qui marche en faisant parade de sa force échouera dans ses entreprises. Il aura à s’en repentir.
  Vaincu, il s’en ira plein de regret.
• 2. Celui qui est prudent et appelle à temps à son aide, dans une attaque, n’aura rien à en craindre. Il a pris le bon moyen.
  
• 3. Celui qui met sa force dans ses mâchoires* aura malheur. Le sage est résolu, réglé ; partout, il va seul. S’il lui survient des désagréments qui lui attirent la malveillance, il n’en subira aucun résultat fâcheux.
  Le sage est résolu, bien réglé, partant il ne se crée pas de regret. 
  * En ses vantardises. La force, la violence se montre sur son visage.
  
• 4. Si l’on va comme manquant d’appui*, avançant pas à pas et comme conduisant un troupeau de moutons, par le fait même de cette lenteur prudente on n’aura point de cause de regret. On ne se fiera pas à tout ce qu’on entend dire.
  
  * Litt. : « Cul sans peau », expression proverbiale. Cf. notre expression : « Aller comme une manne sans fond », pour dire : aller étourdiment.
• 5. Ferme et résolu, comme un mont couvert d’artemisias, suivant le chemin du milieu, on n’aura point de regret.
