In Phî there is the want of good understanding between the (different classes of) men, and its indication is unfavourable to the firm and correct course of the superior man. We see in it the great gone and the little come.

12 - Disorganisation

Problems prevent the progress. The best solution would be to leave.

Symbolisme

L’obstacle aux relations du ciel et de la terre forme p’ī. En ce cas, le sage restreint son action et évite les difficultés. Les sages ne tirent pas d’honneur de leurs émoluments ; ils retiennent leurs vertus en leur cœur .

Commentaire

P’ī désigne le méchant. Quand p’ī domine, le ciel et la terre sont sans rapport, les êtres ne se produisent pas. Quand le haut et le bas sont désunis, l’empire est sans gouvernement digne de ce nom.

Without taking initiatives, one is asked to commit oneself. Friends are invited.

One has sorted things out, but is still cautious.

Shăng indicates that (under its conditions) there will be great progress and success. Seeking by (the qualities implied in it) to meet with the great man, its subject need have no anxiety. Advance to the south will be fortunate.

One is guided until one reaches knowledge.

46 - Shâng, l’ascension

Shāng : monter, s’élever, prospérer, grandir.

Shang « monter, s’élever ». Les commencements se développant, le grand homme apparaît. S’il va en avant sans souci, sans fausse inquiétude, il aura le bonheur. Comm. : le grand condescendant, vertueux, amasse les biens ; le petit s’élevant, devient grand.

Symbolisme

Un arbre croissant au milieu de la terre figure Shàng, « monter ». Ainsi l’homme supérieur, s’attachant à la vertu, accumule les petits mérites, pour la rendre grande et élevée.

Commentaire

Le petit en son temps peut s’élever. Le fort condescendant et doux garde le milieu et agit convenablement (envers le petit). De là naît grande prospérité. Ainsi l’homme vraiment grand se manifeste. Il est loué de tous, ses desseins réussissent.

• 1. The first line, divided, shows the wild geese gradually approaching the shore. A young officer (in similar circumstances) will be in a position of danger, and be spoken against ; but there will be no error.
• 2. The second line, divided, shows the geese gradually approaching the large rocks, where they eat and drink joyfully and at ease. There will be good fortune.
• 3. The third line, undivided, shows them gradually advanced to the dry plains. (It suggests also the idea of) a husband who goes on an expedition from which he does not return, and of a wife who is pregnant, but will not nourish her child. There will be evil. (The case symbolised )might be advantageous in resisting plunderers.
• 4. The fourth line, divided, shows the geese gradually advanced to the trees. They may light on the flat branches. There will be no error.
• 5. The fifth line, undivided, shows the geese gradually advanced to the high mound. (It suggests the idea of) a wife who for three years does not become pregnant ; but in the end the natural issue cannot be prevented. There will be good fortune.
• 6. The sixth line, undivided, shows the geese gradually advanced to the large heights (beyond). Their feathers can be used as ornaments. There will be good fortune.

• 2. Ces oies vont pas à pas vers des rochers où elles auront à manger et à boire ; joyeuses et contentes (de leur prudence persévérante), elles y sont tout à l’aise [et n’y ont pas une satisfaction vaine.].
• 3. Ces oies vont pas à pas vers un monticule sur la terre sèche (elles n’y trouvent rien). Ainsi un époux part pour une expédition dont il ne revient pas. [Il quitte pour toujours sa compagne.] Ainsi une épouse a conçu un enfant qu’elle ne pourra élever (faute de soutien de son époux). Il faut arrêter les brigands, causes de ses malheurs. [On doit se protéger l’un l’autre.]
• 4. Les oies avancent pas à pas vers un arbre. Qui gagnera les grosses branches y sera bien, pourra s’y reposer.
• 5. Elles s’avancent vers une hauteur qu’elles atteindront difficilement et tardivement. [Ainsi une épouse est trois ans sans enfant, mais à la fin plus d’empêchement ; elle obtient l’objet de ses désirs.] (Il faut être patient et ne point désespérer ; patience et longueur de temps font plus que force.)
