Le Koua représente le feu au-dessus du ciel. Ainsi l’homme supérieur réprime le mal, répand le bien et se conforme en tout au décret du ciel.

Commentaire

La vraie grandeur, c’est la bonté possédant les honneurs ; le grand gardant le milieu, et petits et grands restant en harmonie. Force et fermeté avec habileté et intelligence forment sa vertu. Il est d’accord avec le ciel, agit à son temps et prospère grandement.

Accepting loss and abandon, this is how one reduces the danger.

Accepter la perte et l'abandon, c'est ainsi que l'on fait reculer le danger.

All are accepted but one will move away from those who ask for the impossible.

20 - THE KWÂN HEXAGRAM.

Kwan shows (how he whom it represents should be like) the worshipper who has washed his hands, but not (yet) presented his offerings ;---with sincerity and an appearance of dignity (commanding reverent regard).

Going to see and be seen.

20 - Kwèn, la contemplation

Kwèn : 1. Regarder, contempler, regard ; 2. Apparence extérieure, maintien ; 3. Gravité, dignité.

Texte

Maintien, gravité comme celle de quelqu’un qui est purifié et prêt à offrir le sacrifice et ne fait point l’offrande ; il est plein de droiture, de dignité sévère.

Symbolisme

Vent passant, soufflant sur la terre. Les anciens rois observaient (les caractères) des lieux et du peuple pour établir leur enseignement.
Le grand observateur (figuré par le trigramme du vent) se tient en haut lieu; l’homme bienveillant et conciliant (représenté par le trigramme de la terre) se tient au milieu pour inspecter, contempler le monde.

Commentaire

Les inférieurs le contemplent et se modèlent sur lui. Contemplant la voie spirituelle du ciel et les saisons (se succédant) sans changement, le saint s’y conforme et établit en conséquence son enseignement.

• 1. The first line, undivided, shows its subject in (the pride of) strength advancing with his toes. He goes forward, but will not succeed. There will be ground for blame.
• 2. The second line, undivided, shows its subject full of apprehension and appealing (for sympathy and help). Late at night hostile measures may be (taken against him), but he need not be anxious about them.
• 3. The third line, undivided, shows its subject (about to advance) with strong (and determined) looks. There will be evil. (But) the superior man, bent on cutting off (the criminal), will walk alone and encounter the rain, (till he be hated by his proper associates) as if he were contaminated (by the others). (In the end) there will be no blame against him.
• 4. The fourth line, undivided, shows one from whose buttocks the skin has been stripped, and who walks slowly and with difficulty. (If he could act) like a sheep led (after its companions), occasion for repentance would disappear. But though he hear these words, he will not believe them.
• 5. The fifth line, undivided, shows (the small men like) a bed of purslain, which ought to be uprooted with the utmost determination. (The subject of the line having such determination), his action, in harmony with his central position, will lead to no error or blame.
• 6. The sixth line, divided, shows its subject without any (helpers) on whom to call. His end will be evil.

One tries a final mediation before engaging in real hostilities.

Kwāi : 1. Rivière divisée en branches ; diviser, couper, disperser ; 2. Décider, régler définitivement, résolu, tranchant ; 3. Habileté, art, prudence.

• 1. Celui qui marche en faisant parade de sa force échouera dans ses entreprises. Il aura à s’en repentir.
  Vaincu, il s’en ira plein de regret.
• 2. Celui qui est prudent et appelle à temps à son aide, dans une attaque, n’aura rien à en craindre. Il a pris le bon moyen.
  
• 3. Celui qui met sa force dans ses mâchoires* aura malheur. Le sage est résolu, réglé ; partout, il va seul. S’il lui survient des désagréments qui lui attirent la malveillance, il n’en subira aucun résultat fâcheux.
  Le sage est résolu, bien réglé, partant il ne se crée pas de regret. 
  * En ses vantardises. La force, la violence se montre sur son visage.
  
• 4. Si l’on va comme manquant d’appui*, avançant pas à pas et comme conduisant un troupeau de moutons, par le fait même de cette lenteur prudente on n’aura point de cause de regret. On ne se fiera pas à tout ce qu’on entend dire.
  
  * Litt. : « Cul sans peau », expression proverbiale. Cf. notre expression : « Aller comme une manne sans fond », pour dire : aller étourdiment.
• 5. Ferme et résolu, comme un mont couvert d’artemisias, suivant le chemin du milieu, on n’aura point de regret.
• 6. Si l’on n’a personne que l’on puisse appeler à son secours (bien que ferme et habile), on aura à la fin des revers.
