  • Daily reading: 15.3 (TTC 1: Constantly with desire, one observes its manifestations)

    Chapter 1: http://www.taoism.net/ttc/complete.htm

    The Yi Jing commented:

    Constantly with desire, one observes its manifestations -> 15.3 > 2

    The formation
    15 - Decency
    One shall not provoke with initiatives.

    3 - One remains modest despite their success so they can continue.

    In the making
    2 - Obedience
    Being able to provide assistance, without taking decisions.

    My interpretation:

    This reading is almost understandable, as it happens often. We grasp some of the meaning but it's not perfectly clear. So we are going to ask follow-up questions to clarify.

    Who or what shall not provoke with initiatives? (15)

    Who or what shall not provoke with initiatives? -> 30.1.4 > 52

    The formation

    Slowing down or rushing.

    One returns to see the results of their action.

    The results are modest.

    Who or what can continue? (15.3)

    Who or what can continue? -> 5.3.4 > 58

    The formation
    5 - Patience
    Something is coming, look forward to it with confidence rather than going and see.

    3 - Others become distant because one did not make their commitment fast enough.
    4 - Keep calm.

    It's about controlling oneself but we can ask more questions.

    In the making
    58 - Attraction
    Wait before committing oneself. A simple proposal is enough. One wants to know what the other desires before responding.

    The desire.

    Who or what becomes distant? (5.3)

    Who or what become distant? -> 20.6 > 8

    The formation
    20 - View
    Going to see and be seen.

    6 - One does not want to see the difficulty.

    Avoiding difficulties.

    In the making

    Getting freed from desire.

    What limited them? (40)

    What limited them? -> 4.1.3 > 26

    The formation
    4 - Asking for advice
    Give references to the student who asks oneself questions, but delay before answering to the foolish questions. That way the student will trust their judgment.

    1 - One shows the student the limits which must not be exceeded, then the student must be trusted.
    3 - One shall not give in to the impatience of the younger ones.

    Controlling impatience.

    In the making

    2 - Others don't want because one needs to organize themself before being trusted.
    6 - One needs to be available to be useful.

    A few more questions would be helpful.

    In the making
    53 - To associate
    One offers their fellows to overcome constraints by associating.

    What is the plan? (48)

    What is the plan? -> 58.1.4.5 > 7

    The formation
    58 - Attraction
    Wait before committing oneself. A simple proposal is enough. One wants to know what the other desires before responding.

    1 - One lacks means but can continue with others.
    4 - Profiteers want to limit the response to the most modest demands.
    5 - Repel the dangerous incitations.

    The plan is to maintain their desire by using alternatives (for example a photo of the loved one) (line 1), to not be satisfied with modest demands (line 4) and to refrain from satisfying their desires by using dangerous means (line 6). Thus, the desire is still present but remains unsatisfied.

    In the making
    7 - The will
    To solve their problems, one will need discipline and continuity.

    62 - Exit
    One checks before going out.

    Available for what? (48.6)

    Available for what? -> 22.1.6 > 15

    22 - Reservation
    One shall not move too hastily.

    1 - One is trusted to succeed without help.
    6 - One hides their difficulties to help the weakest and let the most able continue without help.

    Keep on going despite the unsatisfied desire.

    In the making
    15 - Decency
    One shall not provoke with initiatives.

    What are the constraints? (53)

    What are the constraints? -> 7

    The formation
    7 - The will
    To solve their problems, one will need discipline and continuity.

    Having enough will and discipline.

    What kind of assistance? (2)

    What kind of assistance? -> 12.4 > 20

    The formation
    12 - Disorganization
    Problems prevent the progress. The best solution would be to leave.

    4 - Without taking initiatives, one is asked to commit. The friends are helped.

    The urge to do something.

    In the making
    20 - View
    Going to see and be seen.

    What kind of decisions? (2)

    What kind of decisions? -> 15.2 > 46

    Nuclear hexagram:

    The nuclear hexagram represents the origin of the situation:

    No question -> 40.2.4 > 2

    The formation
    40 - Amending
    One makes progress by abandoning what limited them.

    2 - One is asked to find the answers before it is too late.
    4 - Doors will open if one deviates from an unnecessary convenience.

    In the making
    2 - Obedience
    Being able to provide assistance, without taking decisions.

    Someone has an unsatisfied desire, and performs unnecessary actions because of that.

    Conclusion:

    We should act only when it is necessary. But unsatisfied desires lead us to great actions. A scientist will forge a new theory, an artist will create a painting or a song, a writer a new book, a businessman will build an empire.

    The Yi Jing commented this line with: 15.3 One remains modest despite their success so they can continue. which perfectly describes this.

    About 15.3 we have asked about the modesty, and the answer was that the results were modest: the desire is not satisfied. Then we have asked what could continue, and received 5.3.4 as answer. 5.3 Others become distant because one did not make their commitment fast enough. is about how someone does not get rid of desire because they could not satisfy it. 5.4 Keep calm. is about how staying calm is required.

    The hexagram 15 is about not going too slow or too fast, which would result in a stop.

    The hexagram 2 is about how the urge to do something leads to unnecessary action. This action may be necessary to others, but not to the person subject to desires. So, unsatisfied desires result in the driving force that encourages us to help others.
