  • WARNING: The I Ching's answers come from God

While the question of divination is a touchy subject in religion, a number of religious scriptures hint that we receive our answers directly from God.

In the chapter 7 of the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna explains that God grants all wishes:

Whosoever desires to worship whatever deity — using any name, form, and method — with faith, I make their faith steady in that very deity. Endowed with steady faith, they worship that deity and obtain their wishes through that deity. Those wishes are, indeed, granted by Me. (7.21-22)
Since consulting the I Ching is an act of faith, the answers come from God. Therefore one must be prudent before consulting, specially in regard with the morality of their questions.

In the Bible, there are strong reservations concerning the use of divination arts.

When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there.
Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft,or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead.Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord; because of these same detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you.You must be blameless before the Lord your God.
    Deuteronomy 18:9:13

However, the usage of Urim and Thummim is condoned in the same Deuteronomy:

    About Levi he said:
    “Your Thummim and Urim belong
    to your faithful servant.
    You tested him at Massah;
you contended with him at the waters of Meribah.

    Deuteronomy 33:8

Thus, you are on the safe spot in regard with religions, if you do not consult the I Ching at all. And if you choose to consult, you must be very respectful and careful.

There is also a warning in the Book of Revelation:

Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.
Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets, ‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.’
    Revelation 2:20-25

As you can see, divinations arts are Satan's so-called deep secrets. This relates to the Bhagavad Gita, everything comes from God.

So, why consult the I Ching at all?

God is the best of all spiritual teachers and will help anyone who requests guidance. However you must refrain from consulting for selfish motives or in order to perform immoral actions.
