  • Daily reading: 8.5 (TTC 2: Long and short reveal each other)

    Chapter 2: http://www.taoism.net/ttc/complete.htm

    The Yi Jing commented:

Long and short reveal each other -> 8.5 > 2

    The formation
    8 - Sharing
Sharing a common vision. Hesitations can lead to regrets.

5 - Showing what is sharing: only take volunteers, let the others go.

    In the making
    2 - Obedience
Being able to provide assistance, without taking decisions.

    My interpretation:

This sentence is about how long and short are defined by comparison. This must be the common vision. Follow-up questions will be necessary to understand 8.5 here.

What is the common vision? (8)

    What is the common vision? -> 8.4.5.6 > 35

    The formation
    8 - Sharing
Sharing a common vision. Hesitations can lead to regrets.

4 - When one has established a relationship of trust, it is in their interest to make it known.
5 - Showing what is sharing: only take volunteers, let the others go.
6 - If the beginning has been missed, what will be done in the end?

All of these lines are about finding the proper length.

    In the making
    35 - Discovery
    Answers come naturally.

Who or what are the volunteers? (8.5)

Who or what are the volunteers? -> 17.4 > 3

    The formation
    17 - To guide
When one rejoices others, they join with them.

4 - When one gets, it leads to requests.

When something has the proper length, then it fits and will be requested.

    In the making
    3 - Remedy
Time will need to be spent. Seek assistance and clarify the situation by identifying the problems.

Who or what should go? (8.5)

    Who or what should go? -> 53.3.6 > 8

    The formation
    53 - To associate
One offers their fellows to overcome constraints by associating.

3 - Before leaving, one asks the others to address their negligence.
6 - One delays the meeting to arouse curiosity.

    Improper lengthes.

    In the making
    8 - Sharing
Sharing a common vision. Hesitations can lead to regrets.

    Conclusion:

When a specific length is required, then long and short are defined by exceeding the correct length and failing to reach the correct length. This is what 8.5 is about. So the Yi Jing seems to contradict Laozi by asserting that the correct length reveals long and short. It may be a translation issue. Gia-fu Feng and Jane English have translated the same sentence as Long and short contrast with each other, which seems more acceptable in regard with the oracle's answer.
