  • Daily reading: 3.1.2.4.5 (Millions of fish washed ashore on West Kerry beach in strange phenomenon)

    Article: http://www.independent.ie/irish-news...-31579375.html

    The Yi Jing commented:

    Millions of fish washed ashore on West Kerry beach in strange phenomenon -> 3.1.2.4.5 > 40

    The formation
    3 - Remedy
    Time will need to be spent. Seek assistance and clarify the situation by identifying the problems.

    1 - When others ask for help, if one accepts despite the constraints they will set an example.
    2 - One must establish a relationship of trust before others accept.
    4 - Someone will receive help if they wait for their turn.
    5 - One wants to know before they decide.

    In the making
    40 - Amending
    One makes progress by abandoning what limited them.

    My interpretation:

    This reading is difficult to understand from the start. In this situation, 3.6 would have been expected but instead we get four other changing lines. We will need a lot of follow-up questions to figure it out.

    What are the problems? (3)

    What are the problems? -> 26.1.4.6 > 32

    The formation
    26 - Checking
    See that everything is alright. In this way one will find the invisible problems.

    1 - One doesn't want to come and see immediately because it is less important.
    4 - Controlling the other's aggressivity by yielding.
    6 - One is asked to repair.

    In the making
    32 - Perseverance
    One must be careful before committing themself, after they must continue.

    The pollution problems are minimized.

    Who is asking for help? (3.1)

    Who asking for help? -> 25.2.4 > 61

    The formation
    25 - Recklessness
    When one overlooks the future, they won't see what is coming.

    2 - Before thinking about the benefits, one needs to improve their work.
    4 - One demands what they have lost.

    In the making
    61 - Immobilized
    Show patience, one is asked to make progress.

    The fishes demand oxygen.

    Who/what can accept? (3.1)

    Who/what can accept? -> 49.1.4 > 39

    The formation
    49 - Arrange
    Renewal is necessary when deficiencies are identified and one has a substitution plan. It will be in their interest to complete the changes. One should forget regrets.

    1 - One is tied by constraints so they join others.
    The fishes moved together.
    4 - One can reform with confidence.
    The fishes moved to find oxygen but they ended on the beach.

    In the making
    39 - Uncertainty
    Solving a difficulty requires a patient study. If one fails, they will receive help after showing that they have done their best.

    Others ask help for what? (3.1)

    Others ask help for what? -> 51.2 > 54

    The formation
    51 - Shock
    Something is coming which enables the identification of a problem.

    2 - One does not seek what they have lost.
    Stop searching for oxygen.

    In the making
    54 - Assistance
    Protect one's interests by making oneself useful.

    What are the constraints? (3.1)

    What are the constraints? -> 61.5.6 > 19

    The formation
    61 - Immobilized
    Show patience, one is asked to make progress.

    5 - When others are waiting for help, and one hesitates, one hides behind their group.
    6 - Others lack confidence because one answered too fast.

    In the making
    19 - To accompany
    One calls the youngest so they return.

    Accept what? (3.2)

    Accept what? -> 36.2.3 > 19

    The formation
    36 - Adversity
    One isolates themself to correct the situation.

    2 - Receiving a wound which will encourage to offer support.
    3 - One had retreated but while looking for supplies they find the issue.

    This describes the humans who found the fishes on the beach and have raised alarm.

    In the making
    19 - To accompany
    One calls the youngest so they return.

    Who/what will receive help? (3.4)

    Who/what will receive help? -> 44.2.3.4 > 20

    The formation
    44 - Invitation
    One must not abuse hospitality.

    2 - One shows behind the scenes only to those who ask and are invited.
    3 - One does not move toward the danger without verifying and being prepared.
    4 - One is too weak to manage everything but has neglected those who could help, so one may return to them.

    In the making
    20 - View
    Going to see and be seen.

    At this point it could be about the factories that cause the pollution, or the people who come on the beach. But the next question shows that it is about the fishes.

    Help for what? (3.4)

    Help for what? -> 62.5 > 31

    The formation
    62 - Exit
    One checks before going out.

    5 - One fixes an issue by seeking far away help.

    So it is about the fishes who are looking for oxygen.

    In the making
    31 - Impulse
    When one helps others, they come.

    Who wants to know? (3.5)

    Who wants to know? -> 6.2.4.5.6 > 2

    The formation
    6 - Claim
    One is prevented from continuing, despite thinking that they say the truth. Do not use force to conclude. Entrust a mediator.

    2 - One should not claim what belongs to someone stronger, they will find comfort within their neighborhood.
    4 - One wants to win then stops because they see the weakness of the other.
    5 - Request arbitration, one will be able to present their case.
    6 - If one forces through then they will have to forego their tranquillity.

    The industries that pollutes.

    In the making
    2 - Obedience
    Being able to provide assistance, without taking decisions.

    Decide what? (3.5)

    Decide what? -> 8

    The formation
    8 - Sharing
    Sharing a common vision. Hesitations can lead to regrets.

    It's about sharing pollution with the ocean, unfortunately.

    What limited them? (40)

    What limited them? -> 48.2.3.5 > 2

    The formation
    48 - Organization
    One distributes their action according to a plan.

    2 - Others don't want because one needs to organize themself before being trusted.
    3 - The progress is not recognized so one is encouraged to come back.
    5 - One asks the assistants who are ready to come back to respond to the needs.

    In the making
    2 - Obedience
    Being able to provide assistance, without taking decisions.

    48.2 shows a lack of understanding. The pollution is encouraged because of the lack of understanding of the industries and of the governments.

    Conclusion:

    Many I Ching's students give up when there are too many changing lines. But with the follow-up questions method, you just need to patiently ask for the meaning of each line and you get the oracle's meaning. Here 3.1 is about the fishes who dramatically answered their lack of oxygen by going to die on the beach, 3.2 is about the humans who have discovered the fishes and raised alarm, 3.4 was very open but in the end it seems that it's about the fishes who cannot live outside of the sea (44.4). 62.5 has pointed us to the fishes since they were looking for oxygen outside on the beach. Overall this line 3.5 seems to point at a future evolution of the fishes that would let them breath without water. The transition from hexagram 3 to hexagram 40 shows that pollution must stop.
